When my husband Phil Archuletta and I wrote Women Marked for History we highlighted 80 extraordinary women who helped shape New Mexico and the American Southwest.
They were educators, writers, entertainers, activists, military heroes, community leaders, artists, scientists, historians, healers, and business leaders.
Each of them contributed to the remarkable story of what we know today as “The Land of Enchantment.” As you read their stories, you begin to see how their lives intersect in fascinating and unexpected ways.
One woman who has always inspired me is Mary Colter.
She studied architecture at the California School of Design in San Francisco. After graduating, she worked with the Fred Harvey Company, designing iconic buildings throughout the Southwest and at the Grand Canyon. At a time when architecture was overwhelmingly male-dominated, she brought vision, cultural respect, and artistic courage to her work.
Mary Colter believed that buildings should belong to the landscape and honor the cultures that came before them. Her work reminds us that great contributions often come from those who are willing to see the world differently and step away from societal norms.
Her story reinforces something I believe deeply:
Dreams don’t become reality by chance.
They take intention, courage, and support.
Through The Dream Benefit™, I help individuals and organizations move beyond dreaming and create a clear path toward the goals and contributions they feel called to make.
I have found that when people are supported in pursuing their dreams, extraordinary things can happen.
What dream or contribution are you being called to build?
