Leaders Who Shaped Me: Smokey Bear

I’ve been fascinated with Smokey Bear ever since I moved from San Francisco to Santa Fe and met my future husband, Phil Archuletta, CEO of P & M Signs.

Phil has proudly held one of the Smokey Bear franchises for over 30 years — helping support wildfire prevention through the products his company creates. He produces the fire danger signs you see across our nation, along with many other important safety and outdoor products. (Learn more here.)

So how did Smokey Bear become one of the most unexpected "leaders" who shaped me? Here in New Mexico, where I’ve lived since 2003, Smokey isn’t just a symbol — he’s part of our culture! His message is simple: “Only YOU can prevent wildfires.”

Over the years, I’ve realized Smokey’s influence goes far beyond fire safety. Smokey represents:

From Smokey Bear I've learned that some leaders don’t wear suits.
